The different mods adding it seem "popular" to me, but the benefits are only cosmetic !

There is a benefit beyond cosmetics - seeing the planet in the background makes it *very* obvious where the ship is. I'm sure I'm not the only one who dropped stuff on the wrong planet.

I'm not seeing that different than cosmetic , considering the meaning is "only visual" ; I have dropped things in the wrong planet several time though.

I actually feel I need to -1 this... Or at least request that if this is added, have an option somewhere in graphics options to turn it off.

I really like the current vibe from being on a space platform - like "you're all alone it's just you and the stars" - I'd really miss this if there were suddenly no way to only have the stars in the background anymore (while not moving).

I'm gonna go ahead and allege that the developers wanted to add this, but couldn't figure out a good way to do it.

I tried the mod that does this and... it doesn't really blend in properly quite yet. Very torn here.

yeah, making something like this "properly" requires a bit more shader magic than just an image sliding in and out.

Now I'm happy to have the image, but a better implementation would require

• more polished animations for arriving/departing/going into/out of orbit
• layered animated planets, at the minimum three layers for base, lights (for lightning storms on fulgora and maybe flareups on vulcanus), and clouds. The clouds can be done using displacement maps and noise, and while there's tools to make that just right it is still extra work
• proper layering with everything else on the space screen

Another thing to take into consideration is that adding high-fidelity planet graphics with light animations and displacement maps means that any mod-added planets also need to add something similar, which can be somewhat taxing.

You would have to have a top-down view of the planet as background, like zooming far away from the map. I won't mind if you can still see meteoroids/asteroids and the platform, but I doubt...

The Legendary Quality version of this would have your factory visible on the planet.

Kinda interesting that If you check the most upvoted post on the factorio subreddit for the past month, it's about the planets in the background.

I think this is one of the most obvious innovations for Space Age. As soon as I saw the ship in orbit, that was the first thing that came to mind.

100% agree. Even though there's already a mod for it, I think it would be much more convenient to have it implemented in the base expansion.
