"Hand Made"

Post by Pandamonium »

Random thought...

Given default difficuly settings for everything (ore size, etc) in freeplay. Do you think it possible to complete the game only crafting items "by hand"?

I.e. no assembling machines

(things like furances and power generation devices will still be required.)

Well, since you could play without ever building a mining drill if you so wished (which would massively reduce pollution, and thus risk of attack), I'm sure you could also complete the game by hand crafting...I wouldn't really want to attempt it, but... :)

Yes you could. Aside from research which requires electricity there isn't really anything that your machines can do that you cannot do by hand. Research is pretty much the only thing you cannot do by hand as far as I know. Aside from smelting that is obviously (As you already pointed out)

In the future there will probably be more hings that can't be done in the hand. For instance the whole oil / liquid thing. And some more complicated recipes will be doable in the assembling machine / dedicated machine only.

HAHAHA... You guys are funny!
Thanks for the laugh.

I was just randomly thinking of Factorio whilst at work, and thought of that silly idea. :)

I spent a moment calculating just how hard this would be. To finish the research (assuming you went directly for the rocket defense) you'd need 44273 copper, 71518 iron, and 200 alien artifacts. As well you'd need 31.7 hours of constantly crafting science packs.

The rocket defense itself would require 61.4 hours of constant crafting and would require 150,000 copper, 80,000 iron, and 100 alien essence. Each steel tool has 128 uses and the tool itself requires 26 iron to produce. Iron tools on the other hand also have 128 uses, and only require 4 iron but can only mine at 63% the speed of steel picks. Steel picks win out in the end because a 21% loss in yield id better than a 60% loss in speed and a 3% loss in yield.

Factoring that in there's another 72618 iron for picks.

One piece of coal can smelt 26.4 ore in a steel furnace or 13.2 in a stone furnace. Considering how much we have to smelt it's definitely worth it to go out of the way for advanced materials processing.

Doing a bit of convergent series math with coal and steel for picks you need 26179 coal for all your smelting. (Assuming steel furnaces) and another 6673 iron for picks.

Totaling all of this together including the required materials for labs and furnaces I get a minimum of.

231116 iron, 194414 copper, 26179 coal, 5 stone, and 1 wood. As well as an amount of time best measured in days.

Wow, that's quite a lot of raw materials. You should've put the 1 wood at the end for comedic effect though :P
Ignore this

Whats the wood for? I guess you are running all electric machines (labs) in just one engine and one pole?

Yep, 2 poles. you get 2 for 1 wood.

kinda funny that you need just ONE wood....as much as I hate forests getting in my way I'd like to make a map with no forests at all, but it would be impossible to win, because you NEED one wood! :D
