Remote Constant Combinators: A simple but possibly powerful idea

Post by zOldBulldog »

Simple idea: A constant combinator that can be turned on/off at any distance through the map.

There are many possible uses, but the simplest example is for PAX stations:
- Setup all pax stations with the same name.
- Control PAX station enabled/disabled state with a constant combinator.
- Normally leave all PAX stations disabled.
- To send the PAX train there... open the map, zoom in to the combinator, turn it on. When the train arrives... turn it off.
- Main advantage: You don't need to define a lot of stops for the PAX train.

NOTE: I am aware that 0.17 has a "temporary stop" mechanism. But it is a bit clunky and a bit annoying/distracting, as you have to select it through the train's map instead of the main map (not as convenient), and once the train arrives you have to disable it quickly or it will take off automatically in 5 seconds. So... a simple mod like I describe would be more convenient. Also, such a mod could be used for a LOT of other things.

I recall this being asked for several times.

Taking a train to a remote outpost to check or edit some settings is cumbersome:
- copy the circuit
- paste it next to you
- check or change things
- copy updated circuit over existing one (in case wires where changed remove old circuit)

Checking and changing values of any combinator remotely through map view would be a bit qol feature.

Something like this?
A good mod deserves a good changelog. Here's a tutorial (WIP) about Factorio's way too strict changelog syntax!

Also, if they are in radar coverage, vanilla constant combinators can be overwritten from any distance (assuming you're on the same surface). Paste a blueprint onto an existing combinator (must be oriented the same direction), and it will overwrite the settings.
