Directions on how to explode your map with iron:
1. fill inventory with iron.
2. shift click fast underground belt in crafting.
3. fill inventory with any item.
4. shift cancel crafting of fast underground belt.
Various other methods exist, but most have been patched. Also, just about any other crafting recipe will work.

I wonder if your inventory explodes and there is an empty belt space, will the iron go on it? That could really mess up belt lines.

I play with scrap mod - if an inventory is destroyed, a fraction of its contents is spewed out. I was attacked by biters and while being drunk, tossing grenades in the base seemed a great idea. When I defeated them, part of my smelter buffer was already destroyed (leaving one third of what you see on the ground). I tried to replace the damaged chests (steel) with new ones, but apparently I accidentally took wooden ones, just spammed them on a direct line, where the old ones were and after some seconds of freeze I was literally swimming in iron plates. With a sudden rage, I decided to toss the remaining grenades on the chests, creating the complete mess you can see in the picture. That's how it happened.

It's raining glorious, glorious iron!
Now we need to figure out how to process all of that...

You should report this as a bug.
The other chest-splosion thing was fixed back in 0.10

I don't think its a bug. When a wooden chest is placed upon a full steel (or iron, or any chest with more pace) chest, then the excess items simply get spilled out.

People didn't think it was a bug, that picking up a full chest and having every item that didn't fit in your inventory spill on the floor. But they still fixed that.
