OCD-friendly rail networks

Do you feel that later in a game any factory turns into a furball?

I kept getting that feeling after a couple playthroughs where I develop a growing urge to start a new game with a clean slate to build the new factory from scratch: streamlined, modular, logical, blue-print ready.

Now do you feel that belts might be where it's at, but the trains, oh, boy, the trains are for those that've made it in life and now can leisurely stroll through their post-spa playtime? Oh, just seeing seeing those lil steel and steam minions going knocking on the station doors? Trains have names, their busy schedules, attitudes, and you can even race a train in your car! Top that you... conveyor belt... link.

If you say 'yes' to both those questions then you'll know how I felt just before I decided to kiss the belts a farewell kiss. Let's just be friends, belts.

So, after much trial and error, much frustration with the signals, and understanding what a module in a train network would look like I committed to train-only expansion. Now as I mentioned before me and belts are still friends, and we hangout. But the are more like... for local transportation only. The bulk-wholesale transportation has been reserved for the trains.

Here is what the work-in progress looks like from the map level:

Here is the refueling station. It has the most holding sidetracks as it becomes the most visited station since all trains have it on their schedules. Hypothetically all trains might hit it at once and thus its capacity has to be N-1 if you have N trains.

What do you say?

PS Oh, and see those long tracks heading east to west, spanning the entire complex? Such a joy to be on a train as it zips past the poles, roboports, and other trains that head either east or west.

This is.... Glorious! :o just looking at the design of your tracks in the first image is mesmerizing. Lol
I wish I could build something like this... Perhaps I can commission you to make a tutorial of some sorts? :p

Looks very useless to me and a waste of space and ressources. Than again, I think it's more for fun than for a really beneficial design. ^^

Isn't that the point of Factorio? It's a base to go nuts with, whether it's super compact designs or overly large and complicated monstrosities.

Trains do seem to have a fairly limited amount of tutorials and guides when compared to other things.

Guys, here is my save file:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6xL_g ... sp=sharing

When you load it up you will be on a running train that takes you to various stations. So just zoom out, and give it 2 minutes to take in the signs and the sounds :)

This train can be safely taken off the route as its only function is to take you around the rail network ^_^

The save is a work in progress so you will see disconnected rails, clean-up mining operations, etc. Pardon our construction!

If a station name does not have format like "Copper Ore S - Copper Ore Warehouse 1" then the station and the associated factory has not yet been launched.

The station name is generally:

[Commodity Name] [Accept:Produce:Store:Distribute] - [Facility Name]

and the reason for this is to make it easy to navigate when scheduling a train's rout:

PS Using trains really makes you appreciate ability to barrel up the commodities. You will see a decoupled oil / barrel / solid fuel operation. I think this is really neat.

This has put a steel rail in my pants. I have far to go before I can matched the curved rail shown in those screenshots.

I used to have five cars - driving around those rails was like: brrrm, whooom, bangg!! Lost four cars that way.

Besides the map gets so large that even driving in a car takes forever. The solution right now is to have a 4-loco train where I just punch the course in (Admiral Stukov, take us to the Koprulu sector if you please) and sit back travelling in style at 236kmh.

I use the test-mod for traveling, because it gets so damn big.
