I think we've all been there a couple of times. Luckily I tend to keep an empty inventory

You break a chest open... and there's that sudden moment where the game stops... as does your heart... then BAM!, map full of steel!

Belive it or not but so far I never had anything like this happen to me 
Probably this due the fact that I'm used to empty the chest before destroying them from the Minecraft.

Happened to me once (thankfully only once) with a chest full of pipes.
Fortunately the pipes use stacks of 32 only and it happened in a WIP part of my factory so the damage wasn't that bad, but it still took some time to clear up.
