Incremental Updates

Post by Amunidae »

Hey Board,
i've got the problem that my internet connection is bad as f...
When i need an update, i'm forced to download the whole new program, not only the changed files.
Isn't there a posibillity to set up some incremental updated packages, too?
Only the changed files to update the software?

Thanks a lot

The updates are already incremental. You only download what has changed since last version.

Use the in-game updater. That will download what is effectively a DIFF file (Difference between versions) and patch you to the latest version of the game.

instead of the nearly 1GB of game to download, it's often less than 30MB.

I respectfully disagree. the download files listed on the website are all ~800mb. there is no 'update' file, only the full download. Maybe there should be a incremental update download available? I too have a poor internet connection and it will take me 45 mins to download the file. (currently waiting right now.) This would also reduce factorio's bandwidth usage when we all stampede to the download page to update to the latest version.

If you use the in game updater, don't you effectively get a diff? Note that the in game updater downloads incremental files aren't listed on factorio.com

Alternatively you could use the steam version, that will also only download the changed stuff.

I never use the in game update, because my connections so slow I don't want my game tied up for ~30 minutes while I can't do anything (I have tried it). So the on web site downloads are for me since i can download in the background and play while i wait.

If you have the zip version, you can just copy the entire folder, have the second instance updae, play on the first instance and then move over the save, when you finish.

Incremental Updates!

Post by walterwoj »

I've suggested it before, but I'll suggest it again:

Factorio should have incremental updates! Instead of re-downloading the entire ~817mb every time Factorio updates, an incremental version should be available. Only the last couple of versions should be kept available but it would a) save Factorio a lot of server bandwidth and b.) save users like me with crappy internet a lot of time and bandwidth. (it takes me ~60 minutes to download! )

The ingame updater happens to do just that.
If you are using the steam version the ingame updater is probably disabled however as steam takes care of the updating and the devs might be limited in their options there
