The new smart belt dragging is phenomenal, and I don't know how I ever lived without it now. However, it is missing one thing: splitters. I came up with a solution for splitters that I think is ridiculously intuitive:
When smart dragging a belt, moving your cursor to one side of the belt then pressing F will place a splitter on the belt aligned to the direction your mouse is in. So if your mouse is to the left of the belt when dragging, the splitter will be placed to the left of the belt line, and to the right if the mouse is on the right. This lets you quickly merge your belt into an existing line or create split points very quickly and easily.
I'm currently writing a mod to implement this, but it would be much nicer if it were a part of the base game. Thanks!

Why “F”-key?
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

Re: Smart belt dragging to place splitters
No particular reason, just that it's near to R and it's unused by the base game when holding a belt.
