improve usability of blueprints/ should not default to zero coordinates, but to context-sensitives

Post by brevven »

This is a proposal for an update for the default X & Y coordinate values for blueprints that snap to the absolute grid.
Desired behavior:
When I make a blueprint and ensure "Snap to grid" --> "Grid position" --> "Absolute" is set, I would like the first time I place it to be in the same place I blueprinted it from. It should set the X & Y coordinates to whatever values would accomplish that based on the width/height and location it was blueprinted from. This way. I could build a rail line, decide I want a block width of, say 500 tiles, create the blueprint, and not need to fiddle with X & Y values to get it to do what I want.

Current behavior:
When i take a blueprint, and make sure"Snap to grid" --> "Grid position" --> "Absolute" is set, my blueprint will usually not overlay my original, because the X & Y coordinates are defaulted to 0,0. Instead of fiddling with X & Y, I generally just use relative as usual, just being careful to line things up as I desire before placing.

Hope this makes sense!

This makes a lot more sense if the grid defaulted to relative.

Ah, that would make this feature a lot more understandable for me.
Currently I don’t use this, because I don’t want to fiddle out where the right start point is.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

improve usability of blueprints with absolute reference

Post by -DeadlyKitten »

TL;DR
change snap to grid default to start with the correct values instead of 0,0
What ?
currently when you open a blueprint and click the snap to grid option, it defaults to an absolute reference and an offset of 0,0 this causes situitions like the following where the blueprint is lined up wrong and must be corrected before it can be used

I propose that the absolute grid position be initialized to the coordinates of the top left corner which will cause it to start in the correct location

Why ?
The current system is hard for new players who default to the absolute grid option over the relative grid option.
The current system is also tedious for players who know how to use it because getting anything workable out requires 3 to 4 cycles of adjusting the absolute offset, looking at where it now lands, estimating the difference and trying again
this must be done for each blueprint as well adding the the tediousness

I reposted anyway because I wanted to
a) bring it back up after a year
b) provide a better statement of the issue
c) give a concrete recommendation of a solution

+1 on this. I always have to try a number of times too.

A new blueprint should always have the grid pre-set so the original position fits.

Nevertheless it’s a doublette and so it’s merged. :)

If you don’t have to say anything else about the subject, then don’t say anything. 8-)
