Dragging belt at 90 degree angle now impossible

In the era when I have trains but not bots, I want to build stations with belts feeding into the chests by clicking and dragging belts from the left chest to the right chest. This is no longer possible with the new logic to always keep belts in the same direction. Instead, I need to click for each individual belt. This also limits the ease with which a player can put down belts outside a wall for biter slowdown traps. Perhaps if the first couple belts are going perpendicular to the belt, that logic could be disabled.

I've seen a lot of these sorts of suggestions, but...

Blueprints aren't locked. One of my most used blueprints even before the switch was just four belts in a line, and it's been very handy afterwards for when I need to paint en-mass and/or don't want to deal with the locking.
