Roboport domains.

I would like to split logistics network into smaller zones, in such a way that drones don't transport goods between this and other zones. Example would be a remote mine with train station, where drones transport the ore between mining boxes and train boxes. I would like the mine to be served by drone network (as in - drones not put explicitly in some isolated roboport). Seems easy enough, since game already supports isolated logistics networks - this would merely be a way to force a network to be isolated.

Ideas in that thread seem overly complicated for my taste. Adding one string for a domain name (like train station name) solves the problem. One can add as little or as many ports to a domain by simply entering the same name on multiple ports, and they don't even have to be close to each other (no need for them being neighbors). One can also achieve inter-domain routing by building two roboports on overlapping areas - in such case there would need to be some selection box on logistics chest to determine which domain that chest belongs to (to keep things clear -- only listing domains available in chest area); it's extremely easy to not use this feature (by not entering any name for a domain, which puts chests/ports in main domain), and then you can create a domain called 'steel mine' and put five ports in it. No need to concern yourself with additionally marking territories. There are cherry-on-top features I can think of, like marking non-default domains on a map :)

Should domain not be a good name, zone comes to mind also.

What is the difference between choosing a name or choosing a color?

Really? Seriously?

Choose one:
Orange
Green
Brown
Yellow

Choose one:
AAAAAA
AAAAAB
AAAAAC
AAAAAD
AAAAAE
AAAAAF
Steel Mine South-West
Coal Mine
Minor Store
Orange
Green
Brown
Yellow

See the difference? ;)
But hey, the added color option would be nice for a map area marker :)

PS. Obviously I mean iron mine whenever I write steel mine. I'm always confusing the two even in my native language. Doh. :)

Two main differences :
- There are more color blind people than name blind people playing Factorio (I think)
- Two people playing MP chatting :
"The light-green one"
"Ho the one between the prune one and the orange-ish yellow one ?"
"No the light-but-not-that-lignt green between dark teal and dark green"

Moreover, even people who are not color blind percieve and name intermediate colors differently, whereas names have high chance of being read the same way.

I've been smashing asking for colored logistics for quite a while. The solution I found was to create a modded version of a roboport that has a smaller radius,

I will make an own suggestion for that.

Named networks make SOOOO much sense.

Drop a robotport ... assign it to a network.
Drop a chest ... assign it to a network.
Place bots in the roboport aqnd they are assigned to that ports network.

OR ... option 2
Drop a robot and state what networks it works on (can be assigned to as many or as few networks as desired.
Chests can be assigned to only one network.
Place bots in the roboport, select what network the bots are working on.

Simple, clean efficient and allows you to setup bots working for specific purposes. Some great things you get, assigning 20 bots who's only purpose is to move plastic around. You want 1000 bots to move the iron ore, assign them to that network. You want a group bots to do whatever in your network assign them to the default network.

I would LOVE to see something like this. Colors sound good but they don't give you true fine grained control. Think of things like tesseracts in minecraft when you have different channels that things work on. Something along those lines.

I like the smaller roboport domain idea.

I see flaws/pros to both using colors and names.

Colors:
Pros- Easier to use you either click on a set color and can easily see the area difference between roboports on the map
Cons - Color difference on monitors, by the I refer to a multiplayer game whereas there is a "red" color network on your monitor, but the other players monitor may have different settings thus making the color come up as more of a orange-red

Names:
Pros - Easier to determine in multiplayer, more variety on name/more specific
Cons - harder to see roboports zone when hovered over if overlapping with another, takes longer to type in name

Small robotports doesn't solve, it's just a trick to solve the issue.

Names vs Color is a meaningless distinction. Have named networks and allow players to set a color to represent that network end of story. As for the area of effect of roboports, my dream solution would be a slider that allows the player to resize the area it affects.

And here's someone with reason =] Finally!

Yeah I don't distinguish between name and color, they are that same thing, labels. I just want to be able to assign robots and chests to certain ones.

name vs colour, why is this even an issue? that isn't the point of the topic.

name vs. color was (I hope!) never an issue. It would seem that my original suggestion was misunderstood, as in that the networks couldn't overlap, which wasn't my intention even for a millisecond :)

Maybe this thread should also be closed with a link to Overlapping Logistic Network II in the final post since they are both utimately about the same thing.

I think it's ok, to do this in this case without asking the thread-owner. If not: PM button is right. :)
