Multiplayer lobby GUI

Right now it seems factorio is designed to play 2 types of games.
  • Single player, wich is awesome for the first several times, but later - became tediouse, unless you are chasing some wierd goals like huge for the sake of huge, or building x86 because you can.
  • Cooperative multiplayer, highly cooperative, several people building the same factory. Amazing because of socialisation, cooperation and fun.
But game completely overlook competitive play. And after playing several competitive games I never want anything else. And I suppose I'm not unique.

In competiteve play you and your opponent(s) are building separate factories on the same map to decide who is the fastest, the most efficient and ultimatelly the best engineer. It adds pressure no amount of biters could provide. And noone messes with your perfect base like in cooperative games, because you have your own base.

And all the required tools already exist in the game.

All we need is checkbox "each player start in his own faction" some settings for damage/friendly fire/disassembly control, and maybe adjust map generation a bit to generate separate starting areas.
It very strange the game have all the tools to make significant part of the community happier, but it lacks very basic lobby interface to use them.

You can make your own scenarios or download them on the mod portal.

I can work around lack of this GUI, but it's just weird. Take a look at any "Civilisation" game. They don't have basic multiplayer features like faction as scenarios. Nor they expect player to create scenario to play with the friend. Things I'm talking about are basic multiplayer settings.

We have both "Railroad world" scenario and also the settings which allow us to achieve almost the same result in a single player. Why can't we customise our settings and play random map in a multiplayer?

Again, it's not a big deal for me. But lack of this GUI obscures big and amasing part of factorio from the big part of players.

Factorio was and still is specifically designed for single player freeplay first. Multi was added as a nice to have bonus, because people seem to be enjoying that kind of things. But it's already a bonus.
PVP and and competitive are even further on the "not primarily designed for that" list, despite being doable.

I've never understood why one would want to play multi. Nothing beats the soothing experience of being on one's own, with no other people to interfere.
And amongts multiplayer styles, competitive is the one which interest I understand the least. Why on earth would people want to compete against others ? That is totally beyond me.

However, Factorio has the immense quality that people who want to do more than single player freeplay have tons of means to do so. Even if your favoutite playstyle is far from the core experience the devs have imagined, you can do almost whatever you want to adapt Factorio to your liking.

You appear to be describing the PvP scenario.

Have you tried it? Go to

Multiplayer → Host new game → Game scenarios: PvP

After generation of the map and starting the game, you are presented with „PvP Configuration“, which is essentially a lobby to set up teams, victory conditions, balance options, and starting items. Especially setting up the teams needs to be done after people join to your game.

If you have tried this, and it does not satisfy your expecations, can you please elaborate on what kind of features it lacks?

As Koub has mentioned earlier, maybe PvP is not the scenario you actually want to play, if so then maybe “Supply Challenge”, “Team Production”, or “Rocket Rush” provide the experience you desire.

Hm. I’m wondering (and a bit ashamed) how less it is known here how much competitive Factorio is played out there. There are many competitive game setups for Factorio. Also interesting to watch (compared to cooperative games).

And all those need to deal somehow with this lack for separation in the multiplayer lobby...
