How about a mobile assault platform that comes in 3 sizes? maybe 3x3, 5x5 and 10x10. You can have modules that are built and placed onto the mobile platform. Some module ideas would be:

Wheels/Tracks - this allows the platform to move on its own rather than be placed static.
NITRO Tanks - Gives a speed boost for a quicker platform.
Turret (laser/bullet/etc) - For the pew pew.
Power Gen - For modules that need power (duh!)
Shield Gen - For da shield.
Armor Plating - For da arma.

This would allow some customization to either ride the platform into battle or place one down and lay the hurt WITH the platform.

What about just adding slots to the car and tank similar to powered armor? They would use the same modules, except for stuff like legs and nightvision.

I think that mounting a machinegun on a car is very much in the spirit of this game.
