[0.17.4] Toolbelt Research Name Misleading

Toolbelt (as a technology name) is misleading because of the gameplay mechanic changes of 0.17.
Suggest to change to "Bigger Backpack" or "Bigger Inventory" or something similar.
Leaving it as "Toolbelt" sounds like I have to unlock the other 8 toolbelts.

I was about to report this as a bug because I didn't notice that the inventory had been enlarged. You could also delete the technology completely. Exploring one technology for 10 inventory slots is unnecessary.
Either multiple technology levels with more slots or the tool belt actually gets 10 slots more.

What confuses you is that you remember the old times where the toolbelt worked with a different mechanism.
If you consider you have a backpack, and that the toolbelt research allows you to craft yourself a 10 slot toolbelt to put things in it, thus increasing your inventory, then it's perfectly legit.

Maybe the technology could be called "more pockets" or something like that...

Or, for streamlining sake : only armor expands inventory. Toolbelt tech get removed, and armor inventory bonuses get a buff.

Makes even less sense to me that armour increases inventory size than the word "toolbelt" does.

I agree with this, especially in line with streamlining for a full release. Get rid of the bloat.

I always imagined that the armor had extra pockets.

I actually like the technology, because it makes for some meaningful gameplay decisions earlier in the game: if you're lugging around tons of junk and feeling the inventory crunch, it makes sense that you can invest some lab time to fix it. Conversely, if you run a clean ship, you might put off that upgrade in favor of climbing the tech tree.
As for the name itself, I agree with Koub. The term 'toolbelt' makes perfect sense in context, and is only confusing to those who haven't yet grown accustomed to thing at the bottom of the screen having been changed to a 'hotbar'.

Reading this I would say the weirdest is that you start with a big bag pack and extend it with a small toolbelt.
You usually see the other way around in games.
I know this comes from the fact that the previous bar could hold item and the extra inventory was added instead to make up for the lost space.
You may disappoint people if you suggest with the name that the extension of inventory is big.

I believe it says in the effects listing (in the tooltip, I believe) that the number of added slots is 10. If that's not clear, then perhaps the description could say that it's a
small bonus to inventory size.

True ! If you mouse over the red cross it will show a tooltip with the numbers.
I must have been grumpy last time i wrote; i like that Factorio is not a game to give you fake feeling of accomplishment by forcing you to tediously ( or with money )remove one by one some arbitrary limitation on inventory space, you have real progression aside.
Where lots of stuff are polished, this one feels like it is a left over consequences of previous fiddling to make the game better.
And we can't even pretend it's to put the pickaxe anymore !
It is just detail and precision but i'm not surprised it can be important for people playing this game in particular.

Maybe rename the technology to backpack research.

Because wearing two backpacks at once makes so much more sense than wearing a backpack and a toolbelt or what?
