Terrible title, I know, but ignore that for now.
TL;DR
Multifloor towers which can built on.
What?
These are platforms that can built on and layers added above them. They would have floor area and height limitations based on the material used (stone, concrete, steel, etc) and different materials that can be used will increase following research. Each floor has a area which can be built on allowing anything from belts to constructors. Lifts and built in ramps would allow for the access of different floors and each the layer above the one that you are on will become transparent to allow to view the contents of that floor.
Material Stats and Recipes
(These are merely ideas of what they could be)

Stone Tower:
*Made up of stone pillars and stone floor
*Stone pillars would be made up of 20 brick per square
*Stone floor would be made up of 10 brick per square
*4 pillars would be able to support a 6 x 6 brick floor
*Can be up to 2 floors (including ground floor)

Reinforced Stone Tower:
*Made up of reinforced stone pillars and reinforced stone floor
*Reinforced stone pillars would be made up of 20 brick and 20 iron per square
*Reinforced stone floor would be made up of 10 and 10 iron brick per square
*4 pillars would be able to support an 8 x 8 reinforced brick floor
*Can be up to 2 floors (including ground floor)

Concrete tower:
*Made up of concrete pillars and concrete floor
*Concrete pillars would be made up of 60 concrete per square
*Concrete floor would be made up of 30 concrete per square
*4 pillars would be able to support an 10 x 10 concrete floor
*Can be up to 3 floors (including ground floor)

Reinforced Concrete Tower:
*Made up of reinforced concrete pillars and reinforced concrete floor
*Reinforced concrete pillars would be made up of 60 concrete and 60 iron per square
*Reinforced concrete floor would be made up of 30 and 30 iron brick per square
*4 pillars would be able to support an 12 x 12 reinforced concrete floor
*Can be up to 3 floors (including ground floor)

Metal Tower:
*Made up of steel girders and corrugated iron floor
*Steel girders would be made up of 80 steel and 20 copper per square
*Corrugated iron floor would be made up of 50 steel and 50 iron per square
*4 girders would be able to support a 14 x 14 corrugated iron floor
*Can be up to 4 floors (including ground floor)
Tower Research
*Stone tower would be a branch off stone walls
*Reinforced stone tower would be after that
*Concrete tower would require concrete and all previous tower research
*Reinforced concrete tower would be after that
*Steel tower would require all previous tower research
Constructors
*Stone tier, Reinforced stone tier and metal tier all are made in the constructor
*Concrete tier and reinforced concrete tier would be made in the chemical plant
Lifts
*These would behave like trains that move up and down
*They could be coded to move to floors to collect and deposit material which would be controlled by a signalling system similar to trains.
*They can be place on the sides of the tower or within tit by leaving a gap in the floor.
*It would occupy 3 x 3 squares
*It would be made up of 10 electric motors, 50 steel and 50 advanced circuits
*The signals would be made up of a train signal, 10 advanced circuits and 20 circuits
*Storage would be equivalent to a steel chest
*They would be researched as a branch off of rail signals and logistics 3
Ramps
*These would come free with the tower, with one on each side
*Can be rotated so that they are either north, east, south or west
*They have a width of:
. *1 x 1 for brick towers
. *2 x 2 for reinforced brick towers
. *3 x 3 for concrete towers
. *4 x 4 for reinforced concrete towers
. *5 x 5 for metal towers
*They would match the material of the tower they exist in
*Placing a lift on a side where there is currently a ramp will destroy the ramp

Any suggestions or recommendations will be useful!

So hello, i understand the concept.....

But it could be resembled if you decide to have only a limited area on the map (like a single floor on the tower)
Each added floor would be beside the existing floor (leaving some space between each area)

You need to restrict yourself to such a build-principle but neverthless it would be just a stapled map......

The layer problem would be an issue, but that could lessened by simply not allowing towers to join directly to one another. Also, perhaps I could remove the brick and reinforced brick towers, concrete and reinforced concrete, instead just having the metal tower with a 2 floor starting maximum (including ground floor). Could be unlocked with a single research requiring both production and level 3 science packs and increased tower heights could be unlocked with research. They could have a minimum distance between towers of 4 squares. Bridges could also be unlocked to allow for greater flexibility in design. Having it as a late game feature would be beneficial for players with little space likely due to persistent biter attacks.
