Hold to fill in blueprint from inventory

Post by Zero1Two »

TL;DR
After placing down a blueprint, Hold 'shift' (rebindable) to fill in ghosts with items from inventory within your personal radius as you move.

What ?
After you place down a blueprint you would need to have the required items in inventory. Then you would simply hold shift and run through the blueprint and the engineer would automatically place down any of the required items down in the correct orientation. The engineer would only place down items within their normal placement radius (or even smaller) and if they do not have any of the required items, then those things would be left as a blueprint ghosts.

This is similar to blueprint placement with bots, but with many limitations: the placement radius is the small radius that you normally have when building. You still have to run around in order to make sure everything is placed. You have to have all the required items on your person. Due to the items being placed as your radius enters their ghost boundary, you would have to dodge any collisions. Alternate: After your radius enters the ghost boundary, it is marked for construction, and is only built once your radius leaves the boundary in order to prevent any collisions.
Why ?
This will not impact new players as they have not built up a blueprint library, but will make the gameplay less tedious for more experienced players who often use blueprints in the early stages of the game before the bot research. It also enables those players who wish to avoid bots altogether to have a 'low power' alternative. It eliminates the task of going back and forth between player view and inventory specifically for the purpose of selecting the active tool, and getting the right orientation. The eyedropper command 'q' and counter-rotate 'shirt-r' made this process much less tedious, and this additional power would let the player use standard blueprints more quickly in order to get back to the creative portion of Factorio.

This idea is old. Several years old.
It was mentioned many times that the game needs early game blueprinting capabilities preceding bots.
Even I did a similar suggestion once (mostly all oldschool factorians did)
Early game blueprint placement - PACK

While I don't care too much for the specifics, as long as you the player have a method of making effective use of blueprints before logistics bots, it'd be real handy to have this as an available option. Even just giving the ability to shift-click on a ghost with an empty hand to manually place whatever it's a ghost of, that'd be a massive improvement over the current state of affairs. Then again, I can see an arguement made for not wanting to make player placement of structures to be to powerful to push players into the use of bots. Still, given the tiny radius and relatively tedious placement that would still be needed it you have to click on every building individually I don't think this would be too powerful of a piece of functionality.
