cut-paste annoyance

Perhaps there is some really good reason things mustn't work this way but I can't think of it offhand:
When pressing "ctrl-a" to "select all" in a text edit control, (the one that's bugging me happens to be the constant value in combinators although I presume this happens everywhere), it would be nice if my character didn't move to the left.
Probably this is an instance of a broader class of things that probably shouldn't happen due to certain key-presses, when they are unambiguously interpretable as actions in gui input elements or something like that... understanding and optimally processing the whole scary venn-diagram of kepressess, actions, and gui inputs more broadly is ... well, not my job and probably brutally complicated
