Underwater Nodes

Post by Bernardino »

This particular copper node made me think:
What if we could put more uses to Landfill ? Like allowing underwater nodes to be mined?
They could appear on map, but only be mined after you put some landfill.

Interesting idea...
However, I don't think that placing Landfill on it should allow you to mine the ore. Landfill would just cover the ore with rocks.
What we need is a mining drill that can mine underwater ores...

Generally, I think it would be nice if water played a larger part in the gameplay. For example, it should be possible for the player to swim. Also, it should be possible to build cargo ships. Here are a few threads on the topic of water playing a more important role in the gameplay:

Thank you Tekky. I feel that 'Watery Ideas' are a major theme right now, and "underwater mining"/"surfacing nodes" should be discussed.

That would be something interesting too, especially in an alien planet where things are really weird, thermodynamically speaking, but I'd advise as it being a last solution for mining since it should have a big energy upkeep, and maybe keep you too much time close to your main base.

I prefer draining water from lake (closed and relatively small body of water) with pumps system, and then revealing underwater ores. As proposed in "water as resource" thread.

That would be awesome too!

drowned ore resurfaces with landfill

Post by drdozer »

Particularly in water worlds, the ore is drowned by water that spawns over the ore patches. When you landfill, the ore remains abolished.

Would it be possible if when you landfill, you get back the drowned ore?

Yes, but not sensible, especially you are pouring rocks over the deposits.

This has already been suggested half a year ago in the following thread:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=58795 Underwater Nodes

EDIT: Now that the threads have been merged, the above link now points to the current thread.

I'd be fine with an alternative mechanic - sub-aqua mining vehicle, pumping water out to reveal drowned ore, landfill magically exposing it. I'm not particularly wedded to a given mechanic, although I quite like the idea of nautical equipment, and corresponding changes to map gen to make water of more varied size scales so that we actually get oceans rather than a series of lakes. But the central issue is that in very high water worlds, you drown so much ore that resources become difficult to get, so we need some mechanic to recover drowned ore.
