So I am not playing on the cluster servers, and found that if you are not familliar with a factory and than die by train. You can never find you body back.
My fix for this is simple, have the death message clickable and work like the marker; A bit flashy and move you to the map screen to that location.

The F.

Really. No marker on map? Is this a game from the 90s?

Corpse Marker

When I die I'll place a marker on the map before I respawn so I know where my body is. Even knowing the rough location of your corpse it is still hard to spot, especially if the area you died in is littered with dead biters, and it's triply hard to find if it happens to be night time and the ground is knee deep in biter remains too.

Here's a screenshot from earlier today, can anyone spot the body?

There are a few MODs which will mark the body for you - Where's My Body is one such MOD, though it doesn't seem to work in multiplayer sadly. This MOD draws a line between you and your corpse making it simple to locate. Perhaps this method doesn't fit well within the Factorio world though. Would it be possible to add some form of highlighting to make it easier to find your body? A glow or a brighter body perhaps?

I feel something is needed in this regard, it's incredibly frustrating to have the body despawn timer ticking down yet you can't see anything because the ground is cluttered with biters etc - and then you loose all the items you had..Dammit! I know where the body is approximately, I just can't see the dam thing half the time.

Did you play with the Where's My Body and why you think that it doesn't work in multiplayer?

Here's the issue for me. Having a corpse on the map and giving you a chance to find it to get back your stuff is a nice addition in and of itself. The problem is that when you return to your corpse yet can not for the life of you find it, even though you mark it on the map.. It just leads to frustration and frankly a little annoyance. On the one hand you have a game design choice to be able to get your stuff back, yet on the other hand the generally dark colouring of Factorio makes this near impossible the majority of times. A mechanic in the game which grinds gears and irritates on most occasions isn't best in my humble opinion.

Has anyone spotted my corpse in my previous post? (It's out in the open and not even behind a tree or some such) I doubt anyone has, why would anyone waste time looking, when they likely know from their own experience how hard it usually is to find the corpse? How about in the following picture?

GG no RE. And it's not even night time!

At least for me this is a bad game mechanic as it just leads to exasperation. Why have it in the game at all? Wouldn't removing the corpse entirely be better? Wouldn't that also add to the edge of your seat feeling when biter bashing? You'd know you'll loose all your gear if you die, I feel this would add to the Factorio combat experience.

If you're going to allow us the chance to get our body/stuff back, at least give us a reasonable chance to spot the bloody thing!

@darkfrei After your post, I redownloaded the save and mod-settings files and loaded them locally, checked it was enabled and working and reuploaded it. Happy to say I clearly did something dumb when I tried to add it before, am guessing I uploaded the wrong save or mod-settings.dat? It does work in multiplayer, I'm just dopey!

+1 to clickable coordinates displayed on death.

Especially now that map pings have surface support.

I normally use mods for this but with them not having updated to 1.1 yet it seemed worth pointing out the continued lack of this feature in vanilla.

This would be a really nice thing to have (witness the number of mods adding it). You can work around the lack, but it still bites. In particular when you're trying to find your corpse among the endless ranks of the dead biters you created before you, say, accidentallied into your own nuke's blast front :v

It's purposefully not marked/highlighted because it adds a challenge to finding your body back after you die since otherwise there's no drawback to death.
But you can make a map marker after you die but before you respawn.

If you remember to, and even then you've still got to find the damn thing amongst a sea of blood and gore. The idea that this is the *good* kind of challenge is kinda =/. Factorio isn't an I Spy or Where's Waldo game. The drawback of death is having to hoof it all the way back to your corpse, which on a larger map can already take most of the timer to begin with, and/or having your corpse be in an irretrievable location on account of you dying somewhere where your current gear is insufficient to get you in and out again.

Particularly if you lost your best gear when you died and don't have a backup for it. Actually finding your body is a difficulty well out of line with both Factorio's normal gameplay and not, in any way, fun or interesting to work through. It's just a measure that increases player frustration.

I would just like to say, I didn't even notice this problem until I was playing with some friends last night on a custom map that greatly increases enemy attacks.
So you are saying that not only are corpses purposefully made to be hard to find under alien corpses but that they also despawn after a few minutes?

I can respect the design choice to make death meaningful: it already is. you died and lost all your stuff, and you have to go back to wherever it is you died to get it back. if it's in your base and you just died because you forgot a train was coming, it's gonna be easy to get it back. If you are wandering way out there and die to a giant base, your going to have to go back out there to get it, which is a lot more time lost, and having to worry about said base to even get your stuff back.

Do you know what I can't understand?
You dieing right outside your base and a large wave of bugs dies all around you covering practically the whole screen, you aren't really sure where -exactly- you died because... you know, you were more focused trying to -not- die than where you are going to die... just to come back and spend 10 minutes straight trying to find your corpse. This is not fun, it's just extremely frustrating.
And if you say "you didn't spend that long because it would've despawned by then" ... that's even worse. after 10 minutes, if I didn't know that, I'm now looking for something that not even there anymore, and have no idea it's gone. because nowhere in the game I have seen tells you your corpse despawns, in a game where literally nothing else despawns. Not even the bug corpses.
And no, a map marker does not help in this case: a map marker can only mark the general location, not a specific location. This helps in knowing the general area, but as mentioned in the previous 2 "find my corpse" pictures, that's not the problem. the problem is finding your corpse in a mountain of corpses.

Thank you to those who mentioned using the deconstruction planner! I will have to remember that, it will definitely help a lot.

on a very related side note: the other half of this problem is, why doesn't bug corpses despawn after a while? While looking out at the fields of corpses is certainly fun, it gets old after the first hour or so.

--edit: looking around... I guess this is actually a moot point though, seeing as there are already mods doing exactly this... doesn't help me personally as I like to play games vanilla, and not sure how I could even talk my friends into getting said mod as well, but I guess at least it is there.

Well there must be a reason, why the corpse-finder mods are so much downloaded. :)
