A square-and-rainbow picker like in GIMP is much better for a visual / GUI picker than sliders, since it immediately shows the person what new values they can choose relative to other colors. The best solution would be the GIMP visual-picker, plus RGB and HSV hex-code input-boxes down below...which is what I think the GIMP does anyways! :)

Also, I missed this two years ago:

Ignoring the logarithmic and totally wonky curves... that's effectively just the Hue slider
I mean...
:D

EDIT:
I missed the second page while catching up on this old thread.
This suggestion / UI on this other website is EVEN COOLER! :O

Here to bump this suggestion. HSV is a lot more intuitive than RGB ever will be, and I hope it can be implemented in the future.

I am here to speak for men like me who only see primary colors. Red, blue, green, black, and white. 2 colors are plenty for us.

Alternative suggestion: Offer HSV alongside, not instead of, RGB.
Options are always better than replacing.

You guys can say HSV is "intuitive" all you want, but I will argue that is purely subjective. I have spent more time using RGB and hex conventions to pick my colors than anything else, so to me, those two are more "intuitive". Also with RGB, you can more easily get exact values, like 127/127/127 for the "perfect" gray (though there are a lot more examples than this).

That said, I'm all for adding more types of color pickers. Just don't remove the old ones. Imagine the pushback from the community if you remove something like an RGB color picker. You would be getting rid of something that has been in the game since 0.15, and is a standard and well-known color picking convention, just to replace it with something that might end up being less popular anyway. I can't support a decision like that.
