Option: Grid While Placing Item

I'm constantly having to count out tiles when putting Assemblers 3 tiles apart or planning belt paths or trying to work out the damn Roboport's hitbox but I can't stand the grid because it's somewhat obscuring.

How about an option for just a small, 3 tile fading grid from the object:

(I'm aware the grid doesn't line up, not sure why as I based it on the belt widths but it's only a rough job)

Having an option, or even better a hotkey added to the ALT view, to enable this limited grid would be a huge quality of life improvement to those without rulers in our eyes =)

Ha - implemented :)

No seriously - if you press F4 ingame you get a menu with developers options.If you select the basic tab and untick all except show_tile_grid you can enable/disable a grid with F5.

it should not take much code to add an option that enables a grid when you are holding a placeable object.

This is a great idea.
This feature has been in the last 4 Anno games and was quite useful for me, I can see it to be the same for Factorio.

I know that but as I said I feel it somewhat obscuring, like looking at the game through a mesh. I would prefer it to be local to the item I am placing, three tiles is a good number as the brain typically works in threes and it's a pretty standard max distance between two machines (sharing a belt for example).

Thanks =D Yeah that's a good point, with it on the ALT view it could be easily toggled while holding a machine if you want to hide it for whatever reason, but typically if you use it it will be constantly on (like all the other ALT view stuff).

I support this 100%! I'm still sometimes strugling to correctly place assembling machines/chemical plants/etc :oops: .
Maybe an additional option to set the range of the grid would be nice.

Maybe someone can rework it to this needs.
