Multilevel construction

Essense: multilevel 2D construction with cross-level connection points.
Reason: game-depth, realism, more flexible and efficient territory usage.

Details:
1) Elevators and vertical pipes to connect the levels.
2) Switching between the levels could be done using just 2 hotkeys and/or couple of buttons added to the GUI.
3) These underground levels would be auxiliary, thus requiring much less maintenance than the main level.
4) Their primary usage would be for storage and sorting of materials coming through elevators and vertical pipes.

Interesting. But my idea focuses on underground construction, not landscape.

That is a development proposal :) maybe not with version 1.0...

I guess this could be done with modding as there is support for multiple surfaces in Factorio (see for example Factorissimo).
However, as I don't have any modding experience I can not tell how difficult this would be. And even if someone would create this (which would be totally awesome, please do :P) it might lag out the game because it's not meant to do that and would therefore require tons of scripting (Factorissimo lags the game already).

This is not really difficult and mods about it already exists.

For example
https://mods.factorio.com/mods/jorgen19 ... nderground
https://mods.factorio.com/mods/Versepel ... DeepQuarry
and similar stuff, you need to dig through the mods.

And again: Don't forget it's a proposal viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10

The first one definitely goes in the right direction.

Could you please move this thread to the appropriate location? Or should I just duplicate it there (feels like a bad idea)?

The linked article ( viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10 ) is a proposal.
This is a suggestion. Suggestions to suggestions! :)
