This is a spinoff idea from my other post about integrating items into walls.

Instead of that, maybe a chain link fence could be implemented. This would block the player from certain areas of your base or act as a beginner rudimentary defense against biters. This could be crafted with iron rods. You could place this on top of low items like belts and train signals. If you put a fence next to an impassable object (like a pipe or factory) it will not let you pass between them. The item would also align to one side of a block to allow passage through the block and could be rotated to create inside corners by connecting to itself. This could allow a very small walkway in tight spaces but prevent the player from crossing into a possible dangerous area (train tracks).

If allowing placement of one item on top of another (belts or rail signals) is to complicated too implement, then make it so a "ghost" fence is placed over the item if 2 fences are next to either side to allow a connection. It will not be a "true" item but just allow the fence to be connected all the way and when one side or the other is removed it will remove the "ghost". This would only work one 1 wide items, so no placing it over 4 belts or anything like that.
