Custom Overlays For Area Designation

I know the title might be a bit confusing, so here's a mock up I made using the Shift+Space pause screen:

I know you can already tell a lot about whats what using the Alt feature, but I feel like this could also be used for planing future constructions. With the addition of co-op coming soon (I understand this screen currently pauses, but maybe that will change in mp) this could help players coordinate where to build what and where to start storing things. If possible, it would be nice for it to translate over to the main map as well. This way far off outposts could be labeled accordingly.

Edit:

Forgot to include my thought on how it would be done by the player.

There could be a small window when the shortcut is pressed with a color selection method (defined colors, sliders, whatever implements best, im no coder). Uses the grid to define areas of highlighting. Shift could be used to add on new sections to already designated areas. Once area is defined player would click to highlight it where they could change color or define the label of the area.

Sorry, this has already been discussed!
Read links, before continue discussion, please:

In my opinion, this is bonded directly to the naming problem (station names: https://forums.factorio.com/forum/vie ... 8&start=20 ) . Especially this

looks for me like a solution.

I like the coloring (I'm nearly sure, we had that also), because that also fits with this idea (and following):

Uffz. :) now to the idea: I like it, your suggestions for the multiplayer is nice and I think it will be included in one or the other form.

If you wanted to just place this post in the most relevant thread go for it, no need for this to be separate if unnecessary. Thanks for the other links too.

No, I think this is one tip too separate. I doesn't mean, that it shouldn't be discussed here, but i wanted to ensure, that everybody knows, that those ideas have a story and that it should be known, before discussing them. :)

I can't find it, but I'm sure I posted something like this a while ago. I'm In for the idea of "planning tool"of some sort.
:D

And I like the long ssilk post in the link.

I'd LOVE to see a place called "SSilk's native village" xD
