I was giving some thought to Factorio's "end game" and had an idea. One thing I really liked about free development games like Rollercoaster Tycoon and Caesar III was presence of individual story "campaigns". Each campaign has a different goal and takes hours to complete. After completing each level you have the option to "go to the next level" or "continue playing". Like Factorio's scenario system, but taken a step further. Basically it would be a complete replay of the game each time, but with a different goal. I think this would be easy to implement but would add a lot of direction to the game. The current scenarios could become the optional tutorial levels. The overarching storyline could be you building production planets for the empire or something similar. Some level ideas I had:
-A disease outbreak has prompted the need for more science. Build a factory capable of producing x blue science per minute.
-The empire is experiencing a technological boom. Build a factory capable of producing x red circuits per minute.
-On your way to a new planet you crash landed! Build a space rocket to escape the planet!
-Scientists want to study this breed of alien, collect x alien artifacts.
-The empire has decided to send a fleet to explore a new galaxy! Build a rocket factory capable of producing x rockets/hour.
Different levels could focus on different aspects of the game. What do people think?
