So I find one of my most annoying things of spawning is having to go and create an iron axe, you already spawn with 8 iron and a burner drill / stone furnace but I think it would be more beneficial to spawn with an Iron Axe also or instead of the pistol

You need to search for the right word. The word here is "pickaxe".

There are several threads around this tool and current agreement of community is to keep it as it is, cause everybody has different ideas around it. Instead I recommend to use mods; there are several mods around this early stage. From removing everything to adding enough tech/items to come into middle game.

For me it is not a question of balancing or improving game, it's more a personal decission of what type of game a player wants to play. And it must be clear, that the vanilla Factorio should show many aspects of what is later possible/can be changed.
