display transparent grid when placing objects

This may already exist as a preference but if not it seems like it would be very useful to have a faint transparent grid appear in a radius around the object when in placement mode. Not only for alignment but also for a visual que that the player is in that mode.

I like that idea, because as of now it is quite difficult to place all your assemblers correctly if you put in the belts and inserters at a later point in time.

you can enable grid via f4, always tab.
(or remove all from basic tab except grid, and toogle it by f5)

This is something we definitely want to do. The way I picture it is the grid would not be all over the map, but in the vicinity of the placed object (and couple of tiles it would gradually fade away).

If you're going to add a grid during placement, could you also add various range circles (power connection, weapon range, etc)?

Awesome! That is exactly what I was also envisioning.
