Water stuff

How about we add boats -
First, a small wooden rowboat
Second, an engine driven one
Maybe cargo freighters, like trains, but with docks instead of stations.
We also need wooden platforms, and then allow them to be upgraded to iron, so on and so forth.
We also need oil at sea, and be able to build oil rigs on the sea.
Maybe minerals, but might be hard to implement (new drill?)
But, these free materials have a catch - the spitter's aquatic cousin!
It only can use spitting attacks since it cannot leave the water.

I will never understand why people don't use the search function before posting their (already existing) ideas, although both stickied posts tell you to.

Can we get some boats or cargo vessels to travel to and from ports, that would be pretty cool.

Thoughts on boats.

I've been reading a couple of the topics about boats and have been thinking of some solutions from the points raised by the devs. Whilst I will not pretend to understand what these suggestions will involve programming wise or what problems may occur I though I might offer a suggestion for pathfinding, that being bouys:
When placing bouys connections are made, in a similar manner to logistics networks for robot ports, ie they connect to every bouy in range in a straight line. If a straight line can not be drawn from bouy to bouy without passing through shallow water or land, the connection will not be made to that specific bouy. Bouys will also act similar to rail signals, if a given route from bouy to boy is blocked, a ship will not enter that section. Every path between bouys will have 2 directions, and travel in one direction will not be blocked by travel in the opposing direction but travel will be blocked by crossing the another pathing line.
Boats:-
A variet of boats would be nice.
A small wooden one. Slow, low health, etc.
(not technically a boat) Life jacket. Armour slot item, allows player to traverse water. Perhaps an emergency flotation slot item for power armour too.
Shallow draft boats: These can enter shallow water and beech themselves on the shore. They may not be automated. Gunboats, light freight ship with small storage.
Cargo Vessels: These are large vessels that can be automated and have large amounts of storage (various size vs speed options might be nice). They however require a port and can not enter shallow water even if driven by the player.
Ports:-
Ports are required to load and unload cargo vessels. They are large structures that have storage capacity. Each port connects to the bouy network in a similar fashion to bouys.

Yeah I think that is the right direction. As a precondition we need the extremley fast routing algorithms, which is also needed for the robots. That is eventually also the reason, why we don't have automated ships yet.

I have one thing that I have really been wanting to see added to the game. (apologizes if this have been suggested to much already)
Boats, Boats would act somewhat like trains. They might not be as versatile as trains but I have been longing for something to do all the water in the game, and Boats would make island bases a fun and viable option.

In the mean time, you could make or find a mod that adds trains that look like a boat and remove the collision box so it'll run through the water.

i bet it has been already suggested. i m pretty sure to have see it before.. but havent found it...
we have trains to bring tons of stuff anywhere we want.
on some maps, you have large lake, even sea and oceans. sometimes too, ore patch can be far, or just the other side of lake, or river, but a train will get 15 minutes at full speed to get there.. if there is a passage somewhere :S
just few more vehicules, and buildings... small boat, for personnal usage, to huge cargo, who will work like the trains...as exemple..
or maybe a mod (not talking about terraforming, or landfilling /bridge building)

Before would have ports we need boats.
So logically I put it into

Make the water usefull?

Right now, Water is just something that is in your ways, in best case it protects you from biters. But what if there were ships, so you can settle small islands or maybe even build platforms with oil pumps for off-shore industry? Additionally, it would add so much possibilities for different ship types! Cargo ships, frigates, speed boats, swimming modular bridges etc. But i would be happy with any kind of ship, so there is an entity for that.

Not to put your idea down or anything, but water does have it's uses already. With an offshore pump it provides an ingredient that is used in power production, and oil processing, amongst possible other things I can't remember right now.
I do agree though that unless you actually want an offshore pump right there where the water is... then it's more of an issue than it is something useful.
I guess that's why landfill was added, so that it is less annoying.

Well, I'm really into those vehicles, because they open up totally new possibilites for you. For example, i installed the Raven mod, which gives you a pretty nice aircraft. Now I can spend my time building airports all over the world. If there were ships you could also build industrial ports or ferry networks.

Landfills - if water is in the way.
Otherwise water is a natural wall against biters that they can't destroy. I love being on an island, if it's big enough with enough resources, because you can eventually just wipe out the biters and be left alone if you don't choose to be attacked.

This board is for NEW ideas, isn't it? Of course, I know, that landfill exists. And i do use it. But it's a waste of potential not to use the water in terms of gameplay. If you want to play without being attacked you could as well play in peaceful mode...
What I want to say: I would like to sail the 7 fucking seas with a boat. Nothing more, nothing less. Gosh ...

Fish. Fish need water (unless you landfill it xD).

I saw this one, but it's version 0.13 ... i think it won't work.
EDIT: okay, with a simple change of the info.json i made work. However, this thread is for ideas to implement in the game and answers like "there is a mod for it" are - as said in the announcements thread - not wished in this discussions
To qoute En Dotter
just gotta make one little comment. In most of the games that involve crafting and management i hear a lot of responses that sound like "there is a mod" or "it is easy to mod it by changing this and that" and other similar statements. While i really appreciate any kind of help, most of the time i suggest things that i think would benefit the original (vanilla) game. Don't get me wrong, but answers involving mods and modding are not something i am looking for. I play mods after i get "fed up" with the vanilla to spice things up and stuff like that. I suppose thats just a play style preference after all.
