Resources from the skies

Maxis had a great game called SimAnt. I’m very surprises that that game was never re-created in HD.
The game had a mechanic where food would fall from the sky and you had to go collect it.

That had me thinking, since you’re on an alien world. If might be nice if Iron or Copper would fall to the planet as meteors. So you had to consistently be looking for these impact sites to get new resources. That will also make radar very important to spot these impact sites. The biters would also be drawn to the impact sites. (possibly eat the resources??..)

If not iron or copper, maybe a new resource that could be used.
Thoughts?

Great game.
But concept's not appropriate here.

Atmosphere density can be assumed to be comparable to Earth's. The number of impacts in any reasonable area, and degree that post impact resources are recoverable, is near infinitesimal. Both come from the high impact energies from anything large enough to make it through the atmosphere, is too large to be sustainable. The impact itself fuses the material at the impact site, and destroys a great deal of the area around it.

Granted, this mindset requires a basis in reality. But generally speaking, the (stock) game follows generally realistic expectations.

While meteors do sound implausible, having atmospheric resources is possible.

Rainwater, Dust clouds, flying biters that drop stuff etc.

I see that as a mod, when having two or more players: who gets the most resources within given time within a target area.

... The more I think about that I like this. Would be really a cool game....
