Escape key

I see that this has been brought up before, but the last (and as far as I can tell) only time was almost a year ago, and there haven't been any changes in the game, so please let me re-iterate what was said in that thread:
Please, make the escape key close whatever window is on top (or exit out of map mode), if one or more windows are open, instead of bringing up the game menu, and only have it bring up the game menu if there are no open windows and it's not in map mode. Having it always being up the game menu is a bit frustrating to me since no other game I've ever played has this behavior.
Otherwise, love the game... (Well, the game pace starts a bit slowly, but once I get the first infrastructure up, then love it
)

You know you can close any ingame window using "E". So I don't see any need to add same functionality to ESC key.

The reason would be that a lot of us accidentaly use Esc over and over because it's a natural way of closing windows in most games.

You can rebind closing gui to escape button in config.ini.

But if you do, won't it alter the way the menu is open ? Like, close the gui and open the menu at the same time or ?

I just tested and it works fine. It close gui, then open menu.

Even so, it's something that should be fixed; the player should not have to edit config files to change the game to use what is a generally recognized standard in user interface design (Esc closes things) (especially in this case, since changing config.ini is the only way to rebind to Esc, since hitting Esc in the rebind screen closes the rebind screen.).

We should have done this long time ago, as lot of people get confused by this.
The esc (or other key bind to toggle menu), will close existing gui first.
We didn't want to do it, because we were proud, that you can save game with opened gui and load it and the same gui is still opened
(Added to issues for 0.9)
