Add-on for Train

Having to be able to move Ore is great with the train. Could we add a Oil Tanker to the train as well. Since some of the oil fields are far off, we could transport OIL, or anything else we refine all over with the proper train cars. Could make a specialized building the train goes under or next to that has the pipe attacked to it.

Just an Ideal.. :)

You can use oil barrels to transfer 3 tanks of raw oil per car in the vanilla game. Mods exist for a liquid tank car, and for barrels for all liquids

Oil in Factorio right now is a big pain in the bon bon:

You either have to make huge pipes and lose all the presure (you can use pumps but then it becomes vulnerable to bitters, needing turrent to defend the pumps), or you need a huge and complex system to put oil in barrels, load them into a train and take them to the base, unload the barrels, take them to the refineries to take the oil out, all that while loading the train with more empty barrels, while making sure you are loading the CORRECT one (you either have a separate train stop for oil or you need to make sure your oil train has a certain size and you only load the barrels to a certain cargo wagon, effectively limiting your expansibility). And of course, you need smart inserters to make sure you only take out full/empty barrels, depending where your train is.

Sorry for the rant, and I loved the mod that hitzu posted, but unfortunately I don't like using mods, since there's no guarantee the modder will be able to continue updating his work... I really, really wish that mod was implemented in the vanilla game! Devs, pretty please? ;)

Inventory filters work with cargo wagons, so you can totally transport empty barrels in the same wagon with the full ones, and load/unload them on the same stop

I see that mixed:

Option A: Have tank-wagons.
Option B: Have barrels.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. As far as I can overview them, they are both useful. But game-play-wise I'm not sure, if it makes sense to implement both.

Implementation-wise it's easier to have barrels (option B), cause that is already existing. But I think for the fun-factor it makes sense to have tank-wagons.

I think this needs to wait, until it is clear. :)

The system I use is almost trivially easy.

I have the pumpjacks in an area all hooked up to a single tank, which is linked to an assembly machine. It has two chests, one input one output. I have a station at the same location, and just have a dedicated oil train heading to each oil source location. It has half filter for empty, half for full. At base, it unloads filled barrels into an active provider, and loads from a requester. The unloader requests oil barrels, and active provides empties. Otherwise, I've had issues with the empty barrels filling up and preventing more unloading.

Its pretty simple and straight forward.

Also, I am uncertain how quickly pressure falls off, but back before I started messing with trains, I never got far enough away from the main base looking for oil that I lost pressure. While early on, oil might be fast enough for that to be an issue, a tank at the source certainly worked fine. Otherwise, when it gives out maybe a drop a second total from like 5 overcloaked pumpjacks, the throughput limit of 30/sec or so is not a big deal.
