In minecraft there is redstone and i think it would be interesting to see something implemented in Factorio which did similar things like turn on/off machines or power producing things like the steam engine. It could also be used in logistics or the rail networks

Problem is that it was already pretty complicated in Minecraft to lay the actual redstone wiring in a 3d environment.
I know mods like RedPower or the new RedNet system made it more versatile, but in a 2d game where you need every open space for belts, machines or even power lines, where would you put the wires?
The only thing I could think of would be a system like in Terraria, where you install the wires in some kind of overlay that doesn't really take up space and vanishes in the background.
Combined with different colored cables this would be pretty awesome.

I could work on something, if I had access to the source.
I already have some ideas on how one could setup this thing

Well you can do something to do it with what we have, since there is alredy something in my mod (wireless), and there is something else more similar coming for the next version of my mod (non wireless)

Nah, because what I want to do requires a complete new code regarding the way worlds are managed
