Continents

I would like to see continents in Factorio, It seems like an appropriate next-level obstacle with its own solutions.
These continents would be absolutely massive and form the necessity to build boats to explore and conquer new land from the bitters and spitters.
It wouldn't make trains or belt obsolete because you still need those to transport resources from afar to your door.
Let me know what you guys think about ships and continents.

I would love this to be the case. Separate continents would be great, massive shipyards to move products form one to the other etc.
+1 great idea

It would be cool to have continents and then whole ship buisness for transportation of goods and yourself.

The world generator already can do that very well because it is based on Perlin Noise.
It misses alone the feature to interactively generate such worlds.
See also the description about world generation in
https://forums.factorio.com/forum/vie ... 80&t=13022
That is, what is needed.

What would be required is ships!
Ship pathing is straight forward, open water... just make a beeline for the port.
Ports could work similar to train stops.
Freight ships carry freight. Smaller ships carry the player.
Sea based combat? Enemy fish? Deep sea worms? Lots of possibilities

C shaped lake -> not a straight line

I want this so much!
Boats and stuff have been suggested multiple times before, but the concept of making a world with islands (large or small) is what makes them that much more exciting. Imagine large cargo ships and oil tankers, off-shore oil rigsā¦ kyaaa >.<

Right, you can set Terrain Segmentation to Low or Very low and Water to Big or Very big when starting a new game to get continent-like landmasses. This works great with low frequency of resources too, or mods like RSO.

You can try to simulate this terrain - you can't travel over water (I know about boat mod yes) and there is no way to transport materials over water.
I'd see this request as full support - so that we can actually go to continent, build a base there and bring in the materials back in automated manner.

Cargo boats would be awesome!
But there should be a item you can put on the water that the boat will follow, some kind of waypoint.
And a dock of course!

Rivers would just be really annoying in the early game, but continents and large shipyard systems sound awesome
EDIT: as for the marker in the water, a buoy would be perfect (not unlike TTD/OpenTTD)
