Why do I have to select which planet to drop to?

This seems really weird. I'm in orbit above a planet, and I want to drop to that planet. What does it even mean to drop to a different planet? It doesn't seem to do anything.

It allows you to do things let get dropped off while a platform continues on its regular route. So you can board at Nauvis and tell it to drop you off when you get to Aquilo. You don't have to select anything else, just wait for the platform to make its way out there.
