Am I to understand this suggestion as simply "cut the green inserter and replace it with a global tech"? Seems silly. This would give you burner/regular/long inserters with 12 hand size and cut the requirement to get oil from bulk insertion unless you moved the tech further down the tech tree than our current green bois are at, which would also feel bad. The research for greenies being green tech but requiring some plastic is a great "get ye oil" motivator and tangible reward.

That is not at all what this suggestion is about.

That is not at all what this suggestion is about.
Maybe this part is introducing confusion then :

So it's about not adding the new stack inserter and instead adding stack size research for burner/yellow/red/blue/green inserters only? Seems like it would feel bad for the same reasons as cutting the green inserter in favor of just having hand size research would feel bad.

Can you clarify what is confusing about that sentence? As I understand it, the currently planned 2.0/Space Age inserter tiers are as follows:
Burner -> Normal/Long-Arm -> Fast -> Bulk -> Stack

Making stacking toggleable on all inserters after researching it preserves that order. For the Stack inserter's existence, see below in this same comment for my feelings on that, or suffice to say it doesn't need to be removed.

Could you explain how you think it would feel bad?

My understanding of the currently planned 2.0/Space Age stacking research is that it will allow for the crafting of a single new inserter capable of stacking (called a Stack inserter, where the per-2.0 "Stack inserter" is being renamed to "Bulk inserter". My suggestion isn't to remove the new inserter, but to instead include an additional feature to the research: all inserters can now switch stacking on.

Without any other changes, not even my suggestion, from what I understand, the new-minted bulk inserter will be able to pick up and move 12 items but won't stack them when putting them down and the stack inserter will be able to pick up and move 16 items and will create 4 stacks of 4 items on a fully-stack-researched belt.

With my suggestion, the only change to my previous sentence is that the bulk inserter will have an option to create 3 stacks of 4 items on a fully-stack-researched belt. There's not really a reason to remove the new inserter entity.

It's because it seem pretty close to what you suggested, given that in the later sentence you do not mention at all the green inserter, but you do however mention a global tech to unlock stacking, which seem also something metionned in the previous sentence. Yes you say it's "not at all " about this. But really it seem to me the exact same thing, except green inserter is not removed, just kept useless at the end since every other inserter could stack.

It's not per say the previous sentence that was unclear, but your later explanations that seem contradictory with it. It's better now. I understand the suggestion, and think it's premature for me to give my opinion.
