Overhead pipes

I dont know who but someone made this suggestion a while ago. My idea for it: you can build rails belts and normal pipes below those overhead pipes. You can walk under them. You shouldn't be able to build any larger building below it though.

Something like that is actually pretty close to my place, so why not in Factorio ;)

A) You're the 57th person to start a new thread about this.

B) Try my mod: https://forums.factorio.com/forum/vie ... =14&t=2716

57 is a bit too much. ;) I mean about 3 or so. Doesn't matter.
I still mean overhead pipes are the right direction, because underground is not right visible, or make too many compromise

I think, the look is important. Currently the usage of underground pipes (not your mod in special, but pipes in general) looks like ... mushrooms. I feel like Super Mario...

Personally I think this is due to tank cart absence.

at short distances current piping is pretty decent, its the long distance logistics that cause major hassle.

The reason why we have pipe to ground, belt to ground and in the future maybe rail to ground :D is the visibility. The z dimension (height) is quite tricky in Factorio because of the front view (no 45 side rotation). Therefore the above ground pipes / belts would be overlaying with objects further in the back. Not mentioning that for belts to ground there would have to be some tricks for displaying of items to look natural. But yeah, every time I take the train to go to my home town and we pass this factory on the side with pipe over the rail track I am like - damn I want this :D

Well, as Garm said for short distances very ok, but the long.

I would have nothing against being forced to keep space under and besides the pipes, that you can avoid the perspective problem.

But I think to something like this bridge of pipes: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File: ... mation.jpg

Or pictures you get when you search for chemical plant. Normally I don't go so deep into the design of something, but I think this time it is important.

Maybe make overhead pipes semi-transparent? Or do it only when a player is near?

They need not to be very high. Walking, driving with the car and eventually the train, but no buildings. Belts other pipes only orthogonal.

This "bridge" has also some more usages:
- ok, place pipes on it
- you can walk on it, it can be used as bridge over lakes
- place also belts? Rails? Who knows?
