Difference between outbox and sent messages? (PMs)

As the titles states: I sent someone a private message. It has been in my outbox for a day or two now. Shouldn't it have moved to sent messages? I do not know if it has been received.

A private message will remain in 'Outbox' until it is read, then it will be moved to 'Sent'

As long as your message is still in the outbox, it can be still edited (and probably also deleted) by you. However, once it has been read and moved to sent, that is no longer possible.
At least that is my understanding and experience. But I have not verified this before posting.
