I think before doing such "nifty stuff" we should have the basics: HTTPS instead of HTTP.
I feel really unsecure when I need to use my account for administration from this open hotel wlan. :(

Maybe just have a mobile style applied? Seems like that would be the simplest and most elegant solution.

I think, that is a good idea.

Only if I can turn that off.

As long as it's just a skin that's presented when the server detects a mobile browser - most mobile browsers have an option to request desktop site (basically faking their UserAgent string to claim they're different than they are).

I would really like to have a responsive mobile skin / access to the forum. I would visit the forum more.

10 months later...?

I'm using Tapatalk and would love it if you enable it for this forum.

On phpBB forums it should be easy to install it.

Furthermost this is the official forum of Factorio so it's better to be present whre you can.

Greetings steinio

Why have a dedicated app when you can have a simple mobile friendly skin ?

Because there is no simple mobile friendly skin.

Using the right tool, it's not hard to make any webpage auto-adapting to display size (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone).

In fact the latest release of phpbb got a responsive design, you can try here:
http://try-phpbb.com/31x

So the "easiest" would be to upgrade the forums to 3.1. Easy in quotes because there have been a significant amount of changes, i.e. a new template engine, so I don't know how easy the customizations Wube did can be carried over
https://www.phpbb.com/about/launch/

Oh and to put my 2 cents into the main topic, I have tried Tapatalk ages ago and must say I'm not really a fan of it. I'd prefer the mobile friendly skin :).

At least for XenForo (another forum software) Tapatalk is a security nightmare*, and generally doesn't play well with any customizations in any way.

*They will silently release security updates for their server side code and not tell people! Nor is there an automatic update process.

Many people are pushing for "turn it on already" or "please no" but we seem to be iterating over the following two points again and again:

- Tapatalk is annoying with all the popups. If those can be turned off, it's just an extra option which is not in the way for anyone.

- A mobile style is generally a good option, but people like being able to turn it off.

---

On another forum I use, people developed a custom mobile skin (for SMF, which I prefer anyway). Everyone loved it because it was open source and everyone knew how to program, so anyone could just change something if something sucked enough that they cared to fix it. At the bottom were links to turn it off or on. It would only redirect from desktop to mobile and only if you didn't have the cookie set yet. Worked great.

I would also love a mobile skin.
I'm reading this forum on commute at my mobile and it sucks to zoom in and out repeatedly just to. click on links.

My suggestion to increase engagement on the forum

I suggest that the factorio forum becomes compatible with an app like TapaTalk so that it can be easily browsed with a mobile phone.

Why?

I'm in marketing by trade and I've been involved in a lot of forums in the past. One thing that definitely made a difference is whether or not I was able to browse a forum while on my phone. Most of the forum I've used could be found on TapaTalk. As far as I know it is compatible with phpbb.

Reading this forum on my phone is a real pain in the neck and I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue. I would be much more inclined to engage more if the forum mobile friendly.

Thoughts?
