Overdrive engine?

I can build overdrive engines but have no idea what they're for or how to use them. I'm able to put them into a train engine's equipment grid. Yay. I've tried various combinations of having it with solar panels, fusion reactors, etc. I'd like to believe that the purpose is to make the train go. Am I wrong?

They're like exoskeleton equipment for vehicles. Don't make things go, but make them go faster.

Ah, ok. That's too bad. Getting sick of fuel that runs out in remote locations. Was hoping for a sustaining method. Thanks for the info!

Might look into electric trains: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/ElectricTrain

What I usually end up doing is having fuel inserters set up where the trains drop off cargo and add an inactivity condition, iirc. Been a while since I've used non-LTN trains.

they don't even make trains go faster, they just increase acceleration, which doesn't have much of an effect on a locomotive, because it has a max speed and often gets that high anyway. It does help with BIG trains though.

they're far more effective on tanks, because you see the effect far more easily.
