Splitting the Ores

Post by meed96 »

I still don't know much about harder wiki operations, I'm just here to spellcheck grammar. I was looking at the ore pages and I think they need to be split.

Take iron ore for example. There is Iron Ore (On the map) and Iron Ore (Object in inventory). These two things should have two separate pages since they're two different things. Could someone split all the ore pages into (Object) and (Block?) categories? Do you have any problems with this ssilk?

Here are all the ore pages for reference:

I'm nut sure, if I understood you. :)

Every entity in the game has different object types. For iron-ore this is:

- resource
- item
- noise-layer (this is about what you hear, when you walk over it)
- autoplace-control (about the placing on the map, world generator)

For the documentation we need to think about item and resource. (This is part of a project I want to do, to auto-generate those pages.)

For the resource we have currently this
https://forums.factorio.com/wiki/inde ... #Resources
and the item part is described by your links.

Over this there is also some kind of "cotegory" of items, if an item is a resource, intermediate product and so on. See again this https://forums.factorio.com/wiki/inde ... itle=Items

This is of course not the best way to describe all the stuff, but I don't see, how your suggestion will improve that - maybe cause I didn't understand, what you want to do. :)

Well, you have some possiblities:
You can just create a page in your user-space ( for you https://forums.factorio.com/wiki/inde ... ser:Meed96 - you can just create subpages, if you add a /, like https://forums.factorio.com/wiki/inde ... ction=edit ) and show a very raw design of what you want to do.

[Sorry, even if I know you just wanna fix grammatics, but there is no good way around learning the technical possibilities of this wiki. I guarantee, that learning this is not wasted time, cause nearly every other wiki software works more or less similar.]

Or - and this is in general the easiest way - you can just change the pages to what you think - instead of explaining just do it. You cannot break anything, cause if that doesn't work, we can revert your changes. Really, this is the best way: Just do it. :)

Like you said, noise-layer and autoplace-control really aren't important. (I do like the way you programmers seem to think in terms of programming language XD)

The point is, the resource and item are different things. Different enough to need separate pages.

Under the resource page you would include things like the following:
Mining hardness
Mining time/speed
Average amount of item in a single patch.
Average size of patches
Etc

Under the item page you would include different things like the following:
Number that can fit in a single slot.
What objects consume iron.
What recipes use iron.
Etc

The point is, anything under one list cannot go under another list. Two pages are required. See what I mean?

Secondly, I appreciate the openness and encouragement to get people to use the wiki. I think it's a good idea. But eventually when Factorio gets more popular and we get more people involved, some sort of management will have to be put in place, rules will need to be added, etc. I do appreciate a good organization system though, and I do like getting other people's opinions on any of my ideas.

Yeah, I see. I saw it coming. ;)

My plan is to use namespaces for that. see the Mediawiki about that.

We have then two pages:
Resource:Iron ore
Item:Iron ore
And the current Iron ore page (which is in the Main-namespace!) and links to the two others.

The pages can be auto generated, only the main pages contain user generated information.

Rules: There are some problems with this: for example how to communicate? I mean: the wiki can be also used for discussion. And I don't think rules are really needed (yet). The wiki has much less users, than the forum.

Ssilk, I don't think namespaces should be used for this, just add extra disambiguation by adding stuff in parentheses. Like OP said.

I think around here and there. I will find some solution. :)

In my opinion it would be better to have them both together. Otherwise you would end up with thousands of small pages only containing limited information. Yes the iron on map and the iron ore in inventory are separate things, but how much distance is between them? For everything you said you can simply make a separate paragraph on the same page.

AFAIK there are only 2 recipes atm using iron ore, this is concrete and iron plates. So this would not require a dedicated page too.

for the other ores there's only one recipe each if I remember correct...

I would imagine a noise layer as some kind of random noise like irregular shaping or richness of ore deposits ^^
