Should wiki contain detailed info about mods?

Post by Dysoch »

I personally think it should. Or if the devs dont want it, we create a new wiki for it. F-mod, DyTech, Industrio and all other mods add together quite a bit of items. So detailed info about how to create and make them should be available.

Wiki should contained as much info as possible. Mods should have separated category but placed in main Wiki. That way its easy to find proper info, and learn about mods without searching on other sites.

As long as it is separated clearly, it can be in the wiki.

Should we change "How to use mods" to "User made mods" in main page?
The page would get list of mods with links to mod's page in wiki. (mayby in table with some info like dependensies)

A list of mods would be good, with every mod's page containing installation directions specific to that mod.
(Yes, I know the majority of them are all installed the same, but there are quirks, and a newbie wouldn't know what folders to use.)

That sounds good, but i also want to see info about how many ingredients it takes to create an certain item, and how they can be used. Same goes for newly added entities, as you can create nice things with them that you couldnt with the normal game.

And with this, you have an higher chance for people to check out factorio itself. (I typically check the wiki for a game first, to see what kinds of content they have, and if i like it, i buy it)

Having separate section of Factorio wiki reserved for mods would be great. While I don't use mods at this moment (try to find bugs and glitches in original game) I know how it is playing a game with lots of mods (Minecraft) and you then need to browse all over the web to find desired information about specfic mod. That is a joy killer.

Btw, I plan to make feature, that would show:
  • The name of the mod that created the item/entity
  • The name(s) of mod(s) that modified that item/entity
I was missing this in all moddable games as well as in Factorio.

Is this ingame? If so, i then only see useless info (no offence).
What can be done is that it shows that in the mod section of the main menu, that would be better (and more organized)

I said it is planned, it is not done yet, I would first have to identify the modification to the data structure made by individual mod init scripts. (Won't be very hard though).

I think, it should be shown in the item tooltip info (only for different than base mod items).

Isn't that more of a debug option though? I think the best thing about PC gaming is options, and if the game gives you the option to see the source of the item. that's great. But not standard, as it would probably clutter up the UI with information that is almost never needed.
Ignore this

Not only name, also version. Otherwise useless information.

I already took some steps in wiki main page and made https://forums.factorio.com/wiki/inde ... _made_mods
I placed the link to Modding and scripting in main page. I though that was close enough to subject.

Mayby I should have waited more discussions about this, but I wanted to create something :D

I was thinking about that too. Could it be in dependencies?
I collect all the data by using just mod's info.json, but they might not be solid choice. Since it so easy to forgot to update them.

Also I run into 2 problems:
1. I was trying some clear way on telling dependencies, just telling what mods are really needed. For example, Inserters mod does not need anything from DyTech, but it needs optional dependency for correct loading order. Should I just copy/paste what is in info.json? Edit:If I do, I think I need add details about dependencies.

2. Also what page name to use when Mod's name is reserved. Example there is Inserters -mod and there is wiki page called Inserters. For place holder link I used "Inserters(mod)" as page name. Any other suggestions for this? "mods/Inserters"?

The inserters mod doesnt add anything when it detects DyTech. I added this as a failsafe so they dont get added twice.
That should also be on the wiki.

And i plan to keep my current release of dytech online so if people still play with 0.7.5 they can still use it. (Next version will be only compatible with factorio 0.8.x)
So mutliple version numbers must be added when it is the time.

Thanks.
