Rendering extents/slowdown

Post by Phaedin »

Looking at doing a large/huge map using the peaceful mod so I don't have to worry about alien attacks. I love the game from early through to late and think every new game is an adventure. Even though the tech is the same no factory I made has been identical to another one.

All this being said. how far does the game 'update' is it the explored space? If i walk X amount in X direction and put a train every X chunks will it calculate everything forever in every direction?

Just wondering for people who have large maps, what seems to be the biggest slow down? is it the 'rendering' of items on the screen or is it the distances?

The slowdown is roughly equal to the number of active chunks. Explored but inactive areas don't hurt at all.

Press F4 -> show_active_chunks and then M, F5 to see them.

Chunks with pollution always update. For me the biggest slowdown is from entity update. Meaning the time the game is taking to handle all those belts, items, inserters, assemblers, etc...
