What is the optimal gap (and direction) between rails?

I'm building my tracks far enough apart that I can put a 4-way intersection anywhere I want. I think it'll make it easier to make new additions to my railway system. As an added bonus, I intend to use the space in between as more space for things like lights, electricity, and solar panels/accumulators.
