Game Sounds, LaserT, Worms and Alert

Post by Jan11 »

I don`t like the Worms sound . It sounds not good.

The new Alert too. The old one was much better. It presented more the "DANGER" feeling.

And please give Laser Towers a sound. It`s horrible that they don`t have one.

In real no, but it`s a game. A laser must have a sound. what would be Starwars without laser sounds? You are right, nothing.

Have you ever seen an Alien or a person who can carry a nuclear reactor in the backpack?^^

I disagree, the worm scream when you get close is wonderful and fits the aesthetic of an intimidating defensive creature. I just wish it did a scream every so often just to remind you they're advancing at your doorstep. Getting louder and louder as they spawn nests closer to your base. It would be wonderful ambience to remind you that you're on a hostile planet.

The new sounds are awesome. Pretty scary now these little buggers. I think the alarm sound is also an improvement. Decent but good to hear without getting a heart attack :D

Maybe a little pewpew sound for lasers?

the most fictional lasers make sound. James Bond, Avorion, you can think of any.

And although a real laser itself is silent, it need to be active cooled, which usualy makes noise. Pasive cooled lasers cant transfer much energy/heat to be any functional other then a pointer.

I was quite surprised about all those sound (was it me, or did i hear the sea ingame?xD).
The worm sound does not yet feel very Factorio yet, but i like it. I think i can get used to it. Its bringing Factorio to a next level, like they introduced hi-res graphics.

Imho the old alert had lower tones which were friendlier to hear, but schrinkin the length a good choice. Sometimes hou just hear it too much. (especially mp). It distracts me more then the old one.

Yup, lasers should sound deadly "zrzrzrzrzrzr". (and combine multiple turret sounds like multi horns, interfering some close frequencies).

Let's start with the sound of a laser pointer and make it louder. ;)

While lasers themselves may be silent, anything that uses 2.4 megawatts(!) of power is bound to make some noise. I would suggest at minimum some kind of electrical hum, and perhaps a sizzling sound suggestive of burning at the target.

Also such a powerful laser can vaporize or sublimate the surface of whatever it hits, and create a small plasma fireball, that can be heard. I've found a video on Youtube with a homebuilt laser here :

This is true. Lasers more powerful than few watts have active cooling system and I would except 2.4 MW laser to have ventilation blower like a small factory building, humming transformer, servo motor sounds etc. Little exaggerated 100 Hz hum when laser in on and sound of large industrial servo motor when laser turns would be quite nice sound effect even in reality probably ventilation noise would be major component of noise. But it is quite boring sound.

Classical pew pew would be too childish. It would also not fit with continuous wave operation. Those "laser" beams are always short lines.

If it has enough energy to kill something quickly, at the very least there will be a bang if you turn it on because of the sudden expansion of hot air.

Good point. Even if the laser doesn't make a noise, the rapid decompression of the space where the laser just fired is going to make a sound, exactly like lightning. There's no reasonable justification for a laser capable of doing damage NOT to superheat the air it passes through.

You know what would make a good starting point? Long range rifle fire. Kind of a crackling zooming sound, if you've ever been near a military rifle range. That's caused by the same thing, the passage of the bullet pushes the air aside and it rushes in to fill the space. If you start from that and move up to lightning, somewhere in the middle is probably what actual ranged laser turret fire would really sound like.

It sounds that this approach wouldn't work well with the 0.17 continuous turrets...

OOH.

A turret, when placed, is assigned an arbitrary tone from a B minor chord across three octaves. While firing, it plays this tone continuously.

Using a dubstep-style growl bass would be pretty damn cool.

I love the new sounds.

The alarm is my favorite! The old alarm sound was so dull that I often found I didn't even notice it... obviously at my own peril.

The biters scared the shit out of me the first time I heard them. I love the effect as they should be scary.

Great job Wube.

I am playing a no laser run. However, I agree that they should have some cool ass noise especially on impact with the biters.
