I've had three variations of this.
The first, as above, gives you a single square.
The second is an insult, and gives almost one screen of land.
The third, and worst, gives you tons of room, but demonstrates you're trapped after some thorough exploring.

I'll take this start over the other two anytime.
The third is why I don't mess with terrain segmentation anymore.

Don't worry, this is NOT a bug. Completely intentional map generation behavior. Don't bother filing a bug report, the devs have their heads in the sand on this one at least for the foreseeable future.

No, not exactly. It IS a bug, but just a bug which can't be solved easily and, as it is, will not be removed until (maybe) Version 1.0 of Factorio.

To fix it wouldn't it be possible to see how much land is around the character during land generation? allthough you still might end up getting stuck on bigger islands.

Edit: Or better yet make an item that isn't craftable and you start with. When you throw it, it will teleport you to that location. Or make it craftable but high up in the tech tree but you still start with one in case something like this happens.

The problem is: Land generation costs a lot of CPU-time.
