What happened to red desert?

It was so pretty and I did see it spawn in my game for a brief moment in the early 0.15 era. Did it go away pending graphic design work for red-desert-ey cliffs or something?

That's what I seem to recall, but I can't find the FFF talking about it.

They removed it. In my old factory, I had a great area with the wonderful red desert. Now, it is converted to normal sand...

I hope they don't really plan to keep it as it is. The original red desert was absolutely a beautiful work of art. The thing that replaced it ... well these are subjective matters, and I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, but I am not terribly fond of it.
