It could be done with enough trains and inserters.

Anyone up for a challenge?

I'm going to try it. I'll posts some pics with ideas later.

To what stage of the game do we need to get?

Like, automated green science or what?

Wow now that's a big chalenge. How will you get to Railway without belts? "Converyor Inserter Belts"?

No belt automated science 1+2. It can be done! Can't wait to see what I can do with trains.

With stack upgrades can you get chains of fast inserters and boxes to be faster than the fastest belt? Or at least faster than the transport belt? It sounds like it could be an early alternative to faster belts, before you have lubricant production online.

This might be something that you might want to try to adapt. it uses a few belts, but the idea of using the wagon as a chest is brilliant.

Redinserter--redinserter--chest--chest is close to blue belt speeds when you have all the stack bonuses. Since that takes up 4 spaces you'll want to keep 1 space between factories. The cool thing about it is you can send items in opposite directions if you want.

In the future I plan to make 1 long super train with tons of small stops. I'll use it like one massive super belt.
