Now this is amazing, thank you for the find! I was already breaking my head over a simple setup not involving chaining underground belts!

Wow. This is one of those unintuitive things I never think about. When I finally tried multiplayer, I learned new tricks like this. This is just like when I saw people using inserters to move coal between boilers, and it never occurred to me to try something like that/this. Thanks for sharing!

oh.. does this mean that it makes the below type of setup completely obsolete and overkill?

I wish burner inserters could pick coal from the furnaces to feed themselves...

Does this mean you can unload the labs with inserters into a crate as well?

I generally use a "rainbow belt" (all types of pack mixed on a single belt, controlled by some really simple wiring (no combinators required)), so this won't help me much.

That said, I could probably compact things somewhat even with the fancy belt by building in a block rather than a double line.

I choose to use the same layout than KatherineOfSky ( https://youtu.be/Uv357ZfWfaM?t=16m1s ) : one line of research lab with 2 belt. above and 2 belts below.
Simple and easily expandable if i want to add more research lab.
Feed by trains cause its cool 8-)
