RSO-like settings for vanilla map generation?

I haven't played since 0.12, and I'm thinking about getting back in once Steam actually drops 0.15 (it's still 0.14.23 at present). I found that I enjoyed the game a great deal more with the Resource Spawner Overhaul, mainly because the distance between deposits really made trains important rather than a thing to do purely for fun.

I gather 0.15 lets you tweak map generation settings, including resource generation. Is it now possible to get much the same effect just by choosing appropriate resource settings? If so, what settings work well?

i fell in love with RSO.

0.15 brings new world generation map settings. one preset is 'Rail world'
'Large resource patches spread apart, to encourage train systems.
Biters won't create any new bases or re-expand into cleared territory.'

i've started a new save with default Rail world settings. so far it looks promising.

I checked it out when testing RSO and it did look different ;)

It's already on Steam, you just need to opt-in to the 0.15.x experimental in the Betas tab of the game properties.

Well i started a game in trainworld to. However my feeling is resources are still way to abundant. i have 3 big copper fields within a few trainslength of travel.
Compared to RSO where i would travel a dozen screens just to find 1 :P

Yeah, the settings for train-world could be bumped down in resources a bit. Maybe a train-world (hard) setting and a train-world (easy) setting for the final game? Still feels like an improvement to the "vanilla" settings in the game. More importantly, all/most of the necessary settings are now available for you to mess with, when you start a new game. :)

One big thing that I feel fits with the train-world setting (and Factorio in general), is having non-infinite oil resources. There was a mod, but I don't think it's been updated yet for 0.15. :S

Many thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't realized I could get 0.15 via Steam.

yes the resources are a still a bit large not too far out (holy coal batman!), but as AileTheAlien said it's an improvement from vanilla 0.14
especially in the spacing department.

going to try tweaking settings from default train world. more water, smaller ore deposits. then reveal 2048px in all directions. keep tweaking until it feels right.
BTW the map reveals much faster now in 0.15

loving 0.15 so far
