Something I've been thinking about for a little bit is "Who exactly is it that we play as?"

It's obvious he's an engineer of some sort, given his rather extraordinary ability to figure out how to make such advanced machinery from practically nothing.

It's also pretty obvious that he has some combat training, as he knows how to use guns properly.

So, who is he? He must be somebody important, because once he builds the Rocket Defense, an entire fleet arrives to pick him up.

Star traveler extraordinaire, that suffered unlucky streak and crash landed on unknown planet.

He is just one member of the advance team sent to secure a landing site for a wave of colonists. (The whole team is trained in engineering and combat.)

Unfortunately the rest of his team gets wiped out by the Biter air defenses, so he has to complete the mission alone.

Are you guys sure he's a he, she looks like a women to me. Zoom in close and you'll see also the way she walks is very feminine.

This explains some of the character. He is a pilot. Not a worker. And after his 1-day training he has of course no idea about what awaits him. He just want to make his job as lazy as possible.

I thought to myself that the main character has got a personal 3D material printer. Much more advanced that we have now, possibly using nano assembly machines or nano replicators. Feed in the raw materials and it will make complex machinery over time.
He has a data bank with him with most of the processes and blueprints needed for the basic structures. This is nothing fancy, as today's smart phone has got more than enough power to store all of the technical knowledge of mankind.

Some research is however still needed. He may have the knowledge and the materials, but he needs to figure the optimal and most practical designs that he can produce with his tools and materials. Therefore he makes automated research centers that take resources and Iterate on designs - build>optimize>rebuild>optimize until they produce new more advanced and functional blueprints.

I don't doubt that somewhere in the forum there are millions of threads like this, but I can't find it. So, the question is simple: what is the player called? I know Minecraft has it's Steve, and more games have different names for their protagonists, but I've never seen anyone mention the Factorio Player name. Recently, I've seen a thread on the biter names, but I seem to have skipped past all the threads on the player names.

To be more precise: You mean the name of the character. Cause nearly every player has a name.

I just call him "The Factorian"

I like it. +1 for the Factorian.

"The Man in the Middle" - fits for him as he always is in the center of the screen.

Call him bob the builder because thats what he does all day!

There's been that lore fanfic on the forum, it had a story which acceptance depends heavily on personal tastes, but the protagonist's name, "Franky" seems a snappy one.
